The Life Cycle of a Butterfly

In October, my Foundations in Educational Technology Class was given the task of creating an Online Learning Space with a collaborative tool for our students.  Every task assigned provoked bittersweet feelings due to my lack of technology skills. While trying to decide what learning space I would use for my 1st grade students, I was introduced to the wonderful world of Google Classroom.

Google Classroom is a useful way to organize information on any particular unit of study.  The class I created for the assignment was “The Butterfly Life Cycle”.  The Butterfly Life Cycle will be used in May 2018 when we study the Life Cycle.

The Butterfly Life Cycle Unit begins with the students working on an online RAN chart (Reading and Analyzing Nonfiction Texts).  Information about the RAN chart was made available in The Comprehension Toolkit series by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis.

           RAN CHART:  “What We Think We Know”

v  Construct an online RAN chart using Padlet.com to find out “What We think We know” about caterpillars and butterflies.

·         Books and Songs:

v  Listen to the Jack Hartman song: Metamorphosis Song

v  Read the Youtube book:  Caterpillar to Butterfly

·         Vocabulary and Games:

v  Play vocabulary games on SpellingCity.com

·         Kahoot.com

v  Work in groups of 2 to play a game answering questions about the life cycle of a butterfly

·         The students will return to Padlet.com to add information to the online RAN charts

·         RAN CHART:  “New Learning”

v  Construct an online RAN chart using Padlet.com to find out the students’ “New Learning” about caterpillars and butterflies.

·         RAN CHART:  “Wonderings”

v  Construct an online RAN chart using Padlet.com to find out the students’ “Wonderings” about caterpillars and butterflies.

·         Writing

v  The students will write an informative piece about the life cycle of the butterfly

v  The students will illustrate their pictures and use labels
